Life Under the Palms: How Goa Inspired FARA Boutique’s Palm Print

Under the Palms: Life in Goa and the Story Behind Our Palm Print

There is a moment in the afternoon here in Goa when everything slows.

The light softens, the air shifts slightly, and the palms outside our studio begin their quiet rhythm in the breeze. If we look up from our work, we see them swaying above the roofline. Long fronds catch the light, coconuts hang in clusters, and the leaves rustle softly against one another.

It is a small moment, but one we have come to love.

Living in Goa gently changes the way you experience the day. Time feels a little less hurried. You notice the movement of the wind, the warmth of the sun on the walls, and the way the sky slowly shifts colour as evening approaches.

Over time, the landscape encourages you to slow down. To look up more often. To appreciate the simple beauty of where you are.

Palm trees are everywhere here. They line the roads, rise above the houses, and stretch across the coastline like quiet guardians of the landscape. Gradually they become more than scenery. For us, they have come to represent the feeling of this place. Relaxed, rooted, and resilient.

Our studio sits among palms that have likely stood here far longer than we have. On windy days their fronds bend dramatically in the sea air. On calmer afternoons they stand tall and still against the sky.

Soon after moving into this space, we realised how much they had become part of our daily rhythm. In the middle of the afternoon we often pause and look out of the window. The gentle movement of the leaves and the quiet rustle they make carries a calm that feels almost meditative.

Life in Goa moves in natural cycles. The seasons here are not marked by frost or cold, but by heat, monsoon rains, and the changing energy of the land. Coconut trees are harvested, the monsoon arrives, and the air becomes thick and green with new growth.

It is a place that naturally encourages a slower way of living.

Over time, that slower pace has also shaped the way we design and create at FARA Boutique. Working here makes the design process feel more intentional. We find ourselves paying closer attention to the details. The texture of a fabric, the movement of a sleeve, and the balance of a print across the body.

The idea for our palm print began during one of those quiet afternoons in the studio.

Fumie was sketching, as she often does, filling pages of her sketchbook with small studies and observations. Some drawings become ideas for garments, while others simply capture moments from the world around us.

Palm trees began appearing again and again.

At first they were loose sketches. Quick lines tracing the shape of the fronds and the curve of the trunks leaning gently in the wind. Slowly the drawings became more detailed. The layered shapes of the leaves, the movement of the branches, and the way the fronds spread outward like open hands began to take form on the page.

What began as simple observation gradually became something more intentional.

The palms outside our window had quietly found their way into the collection.

There is something about the form of a palm tree that feels both elegant and strong. They bend easily in the wind but rarely break. Their trunks are slender yet resilient, thriving in heat, salt air, and conditions that would challenge many other plants.

Across many cultures, palm trees symbolise resilience, peace, and abundance. In Goa they are also deeply practical. Coconut palms provide shade, fruit, oil, fibre. Almost every part of the tree has a purpose.

Living alongside them has made us think more consciously about simplicity and resourcefulness.

The coconut itself is one of the most remarkable fruits. It appears everywhere here. In cooking, drinks, oils for hair and skin, and in everyday life. Fresh coconut water is sold along the roadside, opened with a quick strike of a knife and handed over still cool from the shade.

There is a quiet wisdom in that way of living. Using what the land provides, wasting very little, and allowing things to unfold at their own pace.

Over the years, this environment has gently shaped the values behind FARA Boutique.

We have always believed that clothing should feel good not only to wear, but also in the way it is made. Designing garments that can be worn again and again, choosing fabrics thoughtfully, and producing pieces with care are all part of our commitment to creating more consciously.

Living in Goa has only deepened that intention.

The palm print became a natural expression of our connection to this place.

Every palm you see in the print began as a hand illustration by Fumie here in our studio. Surrounded by the palms that sway outside our windows each day, she filled pages of her sketchbook studying the movement of the fronds. Their layered forms, gentle curves, and the way they stretch toward the light.

Once the drawings were complete, they were carefully refined and translated onto fabric using digital textile printing.

Digital printing allows us to reproduce the fine detail of hand drawn artwork with remarkable clarity. It preserves the delicate lines and organic movement of the original illustrations. It also offers a more environmentally responsible way of printing fabric.

Compared with many traditional textile printing methods, digital textile printing uses significantly less water, requires fewer chemical treatments, and produces minimal material waste. Colour is applied directly onto the fabric with precision. This reduces excess dye and creates a more efficient and lower impact process.

For us, this balance between artistry and responsible production is important. It allows the design to remain true to its origins. A hand drawn moment captured in the studio. At the same time, the production process aligns with our values of sustainable fashion and conscious design.

There is something special about seeing a drawing travel that journey.

From a quiet sketch in Goa,
to digitally printed fabric,
to a garment that eventually becomes part of someone’s life.

Clothing can carry stories within it. Stories of place, creativity, and the thoughtful decisions that shape how something is made.

When we look at the finished pieces, we still see the palms outside our window. We see the slow afternoons in the studio, the breeze moving through the fronds, and the sketchbook pages gradually filling with drawings.

Perhaps that is what we love most about living here.

Goa gently invites you to live more consciously. To notice the small rhythms of the day. To appreciate simplicity and find beauty in moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The palms are a constant reminder of that.

They stand tall through the changing seasons, bending with the wind but always returning to their quiet, graceful form. Watching them has taught us something about resilience, patience, and balance. Lessons that feel increasingly valuable in a fast moving world.

When we created this print, we wanted to capture not just the image of a palm tree, but the feeling it evokes.

A sense of calm.
A connection to nature.
A reminder to slow down and breathe a little deeper.

Under the Palms is our small tribute to the place we now call home.

Every time we see the print, we are taken back to those quiet afternoons in the studio. Looking up from our work to watch the palms sway gently against the Goan sky.
