FARA Boutique's Hand-Illustrated Silk Scarves: A Journey Through India's Sacred Symbols

February 01, 2025

Silk Varanasi Scarf

FARA Boutique's silk scarves are more than accessories; they are woven narratives of our journeys across India, capturing the essence of its rich culture and spirituality. Each design encapsulates sacred symbols embodying grace, empowerment, strength, transformation and protection.

The Genesis of Our Illustrations

Our creative odyssey began with the inaugural collection of hand-illustrated scarves. Fumie, our co-founder, meticulously crafted designs in delicate watercolours, drawing inspiration from extensive travels throughout India. Rachel, our co-founder, utilised her expertise in graphic design to facilitate the digital transformation of Fumie's paintings. This process led to eco-friendly digital printing methods that employ non-toxic dyes and conserve water, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.

“The part I love the most when drawing is synchronising lines with colour. I've been using Japanese water colour nearly all my life and know how the colours blend and in which ways. One of my ancient ancestors was a famous painter and I was told that he is my guardian angel. This makes me feel like what I am sharing with the world through FARA Boutique is extremely precious and connected.”-Fumie, FARA Boutique Co-founder

The Iconic Tiger Scarf

A quintessential piece in our collection, the Tiger Scarf harmoniously blends the majestic tiger and the serene lotus—emblems deeply rooted in Indian and Hindu mythology. The tiger, inspired by Goddess Durga's formidable steed, signifies empowered femininity and inner strength. The lotus, associated with Goddess Lakshmi, represents abundance and purity. Intricate backdrops, reminiscent of our visit to the Taj Mahal—a monument of eternal love—add depth to this design.

The Transformative Serpent Scarf

The Serpent Scarf delves into themes of personal metamorphosis. The serpent, a universal symbol of rebirth and transformation, is depicted alongside ancient Tantric Chakra motifs, serving as a map to our inner selves. The border draws inspiration from tribal beadwork necklaces of Nagaland in Northeast India, adding a touch of indigenous artistry.

The Enchanting Peacock Scarf

Evoking memories of dusky evenings in the Aravalli Hills, the Peacock Scarf captures the allure of peacocks returning to their roosts. Beyond its visual appeal, the peacock symbolises self-trust, creativity, and authenticity. Elements such as the protective Hamsa hand, coiled rope denoting eternity, and patterns inspired by Jaipur's Amber Fort architecture enrich this design.

The Sacred Varanasi Scarf

Our journey comes full circle with the Varanasi Scarf, reflecting the spiritual ambiance of the ghats along the sacred Ganges River. Motifs of holy smoke, marigold garlands, revered cows, and ascetic sadhus encapsulate the timeless essence of Varanasi. This scarf embodies a reconnection with our inner rhythms and the profound bonds we share with each other and the universe.

Each FARA Boutique scarf invites you to embark on voyages of distant lands and introspective exploration. They are our love letters to the diverse landscapes and people of India, and to the journey of self-discovery.
